How Becoming a Travel Agent Gave Me Back Me—And Why I Love Helping Others Do the Same

It’s easy to see independent travel agents online and wonder what it’s all about and why we do it. Every agent has their own reasons—some join to save on their own travel and earn a little extra on the side, while others, like me, dive in headfirst to build a full-time career. I wanted to share my journey and just how much my travel business truly means to me.
When I had my daughter, I was still working full-time, while my husband ran his own self-employed business, which was doing well. But when I returned to work, I quickly realised how hard it was to juggle being there for my daughter and managing my job. I knew I couldn’t go back to full-time work, so I switched to part-time, but even that was a struggle. As my husband’s business grew, his hours got longer—he was out early every morning—and it started taking a toll on all of us.
Eventually, we made the decision that, financially, we could afford for me to step back from work, and it was the best thing we could have done. It meant I could be there for my daughter, support my husband with his growing business and later, be home for my son when he was born. I took on little bits of work that fit around the children, but nothing that felt like a real career—until I found travel.
If you’ve ever been in the same position, you’ll know exactly what I mean when I say that stepping away from work to focus on being a mum can sometimes make you lose a bit of yourself. You pour everything into your children, your home, your family, and before you know it, you forget what you love, what excites you, and what makes you you. You become the one who holds everything together, but in the process, a little piece of your own identity can get lost.
And yet, I don’t regret that choice for a second. It was absolutely the right decision for our family, and I’m so grateful that we were in a position where I could be there for my children and support my husband as his business grew. I know that’s not an option for everyone, and I never take that for granted.
But when I found travel, I realised just how much I’d missed having something for me. My travel business has reignited a passion I didn’t even realise I had lost. It’s brought back parts of me that had been pushed aside—things I loved doing before becoming a mum but had forgotten about. It’s given me a sense of purpose outside of family life, something that challenges and excites me in ways I didn’t even know I needed.
That’s why, when you book with an independent agent like me, it truly means the world. You’re not just making a booking—you’re supporting me, my business, and everything I’ve worked so hard to build. And even if you don’t book with me directly, every referral, every time you mention my name to a friend, every share, like, or comment on my posts—it all makes a difference, and I appreciate it more than I can say.
But my love for this business isn’t just about my own journey—it’s also why I love helping others start theirs. I know firsthand how much of a difference it can make to have something flexible, rewarding, and exciting that fits around your life, and that’s why I’m so passionate about mentoring new starters. Watching others find their own confidence, build their own businesses, and create something that works for them is just as fulfilling as booking magical holidays for my clients. I know what it’s like to take that leap, and I love being able to support others as they do the same.
This business is so much more than just a job to me. I love what I do. I love helping people plan their trips, making their experiences smoother, more magical, and more memorable than they might have been without my help. And beyond that, I love the opportunities this business has given me and my family. It allows me to do something I’m passionate about while still being there for my children. It’s the perfect balance, and I’m so grateful for every single person who supports me in any way.
